Cool Enough for School

_1st grade is not like kindergarten.  Knowing what to expect, how to prepare for your school day and what the appropriate behavior is for school can make the difference.  Participating in a service project also helps develop confidence and responsibility.

This program is targeted toward 1st and 2nd graders.
Key points covered are the importance of breakfast, the importance of a good night’s sleep, classroom etiquette, a time for work and a time for play, handling homework, and social skills (teasing, etc.)

Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies
To improve overall fitness and improve mind/body awareness, the Healthy Bodies/Healthy Minds program teaches body movement, breathing techniques and mindfulness.  Using poses named after animals, inanimate objects and things found in nature, the student increases their physical health and strength while also learning about the science in their bodies.  These science-backed techniques also help teach the child self-regulation that extends to improved academics and fewer discipline problems in the classroom.

Dreaming Girls

_Before age 12 girls are usually open and bubbly with big, big dreams.  However, middle school can be a big social and academic transition.   Developing personal confidence and gaining a few new skills will keep girls dreaming and help in dealing with a new environment and new challenges.  The program also engages the girls in a service project to reinforce the concept that they can impact their world.

This program is for girls entering 6th or 7th grade.

Rite Now

_Starting High School should be a time of excitement. Having graduated middle school is a time to celebrate.  This program celebrates past successes and starts youth on the right path to college. This program highlights the benefits of everything from community service to becoming a part of the high school community, as well as preparation for college applications and more.

This program is  taught in part by graduates of the Foundations to Adulthood  program.

Key points covered include what to expect in High School, mastering study skills, HOPE Scholarships and GPA, extra curricular activities, and the importance of community service.

Foundations of Adulthood

Budgeting, Cooking, Managing your personal health.  These are all a part of being an adult. While high schools may provide academic preparation, many youth are not prepared to live on their own.  Learning in advance the skills one needs allows time towards the end of high school to practice those skills in a supportive environment while still living at home. Additionally the youth are asked to perform a service project so that they can begin now to learn to impact the world around them.

The final event of this program is a Rites of Passage ceremony that celebrates the growth shown in the program and gives a public forum for the Community to accept its incoming contributors.

Applying for and enrolling in college can be a stressful experience.

Our newest program expands on the college preparation component of the Foundations of Adulthood program.  Students are assisted with finding the right schools for their learning style and passion. They are then given guidance through the application process.  Key components like understanding financial aid and developing the skills needed to complete college are also included.
